ATHENS, Ga. —
Georgia equestrian senior Eva Marcelis
was named to the Southeastern Conference
Community Service Team, announced by the conference on Tuesday.
The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Marcelis has been a selfless, active member of the Bulldog community throughout her time in Athens. As the chair of the team’s philanthropic committee, she has organized numerous hours of community service, volunteering over 13 of her own this year alone.
A native of Seattle, Washington, Marcelis has extended her efforts internationally and plans to devote hercareer to aiding refugees. She spent the summer of 2017 continuing the work she began last spring with the International Rescue Committee. After interning with a multinational non-governmental organization last semester where she aided in the resettlement of refugees to America, Marcelis was eager to further her experience by traveling overseas to work directly with refugees. With a major in Arabic, she discovered a program with Princeton University that focused on Arabic immersion in Jordan where she was able to connect with the International Rescue Committee office. The goal of the project was to help the refugees find opportunities in Jordan that open up around the city, increasing their chances of finding scholarships for them to enhance their education in the future.
