- Arrive early. Know the best route and what traffic will be like driving to work.
- Dress appropriately. If you are unsure, do not be afraid to overdress on the first day. Make a strong first impression that you are serious about work.
- Be confident when introducing yourself. Take the initiative to meet people in the office. At the very least, try to meet all the individuals in your department or on your team.
- Smile. A genuine smile will demonstrate you are excited to be at the company.
- Listen, ask questions, and relax. Everyone has a first day. It’s normal (and encouraged) to ask for clarification. No one expects you to come in the first day and change the world. People are willing to offer advice to help you succeed. Everyone is one the same team.
- Write down new information and any unfamiliar terms. Begin to understand the company’s jargon. Take notes after meeting people to help you remember who they are and what there role is in the company.
- Say “thank you” (or send an email) to the individuals who were helpful throughout the day.
- The first day will be lots of meeting and greeting along with a trip to the HR department to sign some forms. For a heads up on what to expect, check out Paperwork to expect at your new job blog.
