Professional Writing Initiative
THE PURPOSE
The Professional Writing Initiative is a program designed to equip former student-athletes with work readiness tools for life after UGA. The program works with on-campus students who have exhausted eligibility, as well as former students who are playing professionally and still working on their degrees in the off-season.
The program focuses on topics such as cover letter and resume creation, entrepreneurship, networking, job searching, and interview prep, through monthly workshops led by community business professionals. Students also have one-on-one sessions to revise resumes and complete job search documents.
THE PROCESS
The first semester of the program consists of workshops covering resumes and cover letters, entrepreneurship, and networking. For students who will be involved in the program for a second semester or beyond, we shift the program to a more “checklist” type of set-up, where students have a menu of activities or “assignments” to pick from to complete, such as informational interviews in their prospective career field, job shadows, mock interviews, and resume critiques. Students check in and remain in contact as they complete the items on their checklist. Overall, the program focuses on the job application and job search process.
