The following was written by Aphrodite Papandreou, who is on the UGA Equestrian team. She is studying Real Estate through the Terry College of Business and had the opportunity to pursue a study abroad trip during Summer 2025.

When I signed up for my Maymester in Italy, I didn’t know a single person going. I had missed both orientations due to SEC and National Championships with the UGA Equestrian Team, so I boarded the plane with nerves and zero expectations.
What I found was a life-changing experience. Within hours of landing in Rome, I met people who quickly became friends. Over the next few weeks, we explored Cortona, Venice, Florence, and Rome—sharing meals, stories, and unforgettable moments like dancing together at a Tuscan vineyard.
As a student-athlete, I’m used to structure and discipline. But Italy taught me to slow down. Meals stretched for hours, conversations went deep, and every day felt intentionally lived. I saw how design, especially in the food and hospitality sectors, reflects culture and values—insights that directly connected to our course on human-centered design.
My biggest takeaway is that you don’t have to choose between athletics and adventure. Studying abroad gave me friendships, confidence, and a broader worldview that I’ll carry with me forever. If you’re a student-athlete wondering if it’s possible—trust me, it is. And it sure is worth it. Study abroad!
