Lyla Bellar: Growth Also Happens in the Unstructured Moments

, ,

The following was written by Lyla Bellar, who is on the UGA Equestrian team. She is studying International Affairs through the School of Public and International Affairs and had the opportunity to pursue a study abroad trip during Summer 2025.

Spending six weeks studying abroad in London was one of the most eye-opening and transformative experiences of my life. Living in one of the world’s most diverse cities allowed me to learn both inside and outside the classroom. Academically, it taught me to think more critically and globally. The small, everyday moments were just as memorable, such as exploring all the royal parks and catching a play in the West End. London helped me become more independent, open-minded, and adaptable. During my six weeks in London, I was also able to venture outside of the city and see other historic landmarks in England like Stonehenge, the University of Oxford, and the Roman Baths in Bath.

My biggest takeaway from studying abroad in London was the importance of stepping outside of your routine and comfort zone. As a student-athlete, so much of my life is structured, but this experience reminded me that growth also happens in the unstructured moments. My advice to other student-athletes considering studying abroad is to go. It can be hard to imagine fitting it in with your schedule, but if you get the opportunity, take it. You won’t just learn about the world, you’ll learn about yourself.
