Allison Haupt is a senior on the UGA EquestrianTeam. She is majoring in Landscape Architecture and had the opportunity to participate in an internship with Bayview Landscape Architecture during the summer of 2017.
My summer internship was 12 weeks long, Monday-Friday, 9-5:30. On the bright side it was paid, but still a lot of work and long hours. In the past, I’ve always had small jobs here and there but nothing this tedious and official. At first, it took a lot of getting used to. I was nervous and unsure. I really had no clue what I was doing and I definitely got overwhelmed.
The office I worked at is a small firm in New York, only about 8 employees. In the small amount of time that I had there, those 8 people became like family. I can’t stress enough the importance of a positive, functional work environment. I was welcomed with open arms and fit right in. I can relate so easily to these wonderful people and will definitely stay in touch. My one co-worker, Joe, has become like an older brother to me. He put me under his wing and taught me the majority of what I learned there. Not only did he treat me like his protege, but we also shared many laughs during my time there. I have made relationships that will go beyond the work environment. I could not imagine coming to work everyday, 9-5:30, 5 days a week, during the summer, if i was anywhere else.
During this internship, I have certainly learned a lot about my field, and the way things work in the business world. More importantly, I have learned that wherever I go, as long as I am around amazing people, I will be happy and work my hardest. I was definitely ready to get back to school and start a new semester with friends, but I couldn’t help to have this bittersweet feeling about leaving the office and the amazing people that have come into my life!
