Athens, Ga. – Elena Christofi, named the top female student athlete from the University of Georgia, is the nominee for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Christofi has been a standout both on and off the courts. She holds a career singles record of 81-30 and a career doubles record of 84-42. Christofi is a two-time ITA Doubles All-American in both 2017, as well as this past season. She is a two-time Second Team All-SEC member in 2018 and 2019 as well as being named First Team All-SEC in 2017. She was Co-Freshman of the Year in 2017 and was ITA Southeast Regional Rookie of the Year in 2017 as well.

She was a recipient of the Boyd McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarship, as well as Marilyn Vincent Scholar-Athlete Award which is given to the graduating female senior with the highest GPA. Christofi made the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletic Honor Roll eight times in her career plus appeared on the Dean’s List multiples times as well. She served as the team’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative too.

“This is an amazing and well-deserved honor for Elena,” Head Coach Jeff Wallace said. “She has just had such an incredible career here at the University of Georgia both in the classroom and on the courts. We’re excited about this for her and for her future as well.”

Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers. The nominees represent all three NCAA divisions, including 259 nominees from Division I, 126 from Division II and 220 from Division III. Nominees competed in 24 sports, with multi-sport student-athletes accounting for 128 of the nominees.

Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school’s primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
