Georgia’s Silas Demary Jr. has been named to the Southeastern Conference’s Community Service Team for men’s basketball.
Demary has continued his role as a community leader during his first season with the Bulldogs. Prior to arriving in Athens, he was involved in numerous community service initiatives in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., serving as a youth leader at Wake Chapel Church and also volunteering with the Raleigh Mission & Helping Hands, Raleigh Food Bank, The Salvation Army, Raleigh Boys & Girls Club serving Wake County and Habitat for Humanity. Demary was selected for the UGA Athletic Association’s L.E.A.D. Academy and has taken part with the Athens Boys and Girls Club’s “Shop with a Bulldog” program designed to provide Christmas gifts to deserving youth in the Athens/Clarke County Area.
Demary has been a standout on the court as well. He has started 29 of 30 games this season, only missing out when the Bulldogs used an all-senior lineup on “Senior Night.” At that point, Demary was the only SEC freshman to start every game this season. He became the first freshman to start the season opener for the Bulldogs since Anthony Edwards in 2019.
Overall, he is averaging 9.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 27.1 minutes of playing time per game. Demary has increased his scoring average to 10.2 ppg in SEC games. He has notched 14 double-digit scoring outputs, headlined by a season-high 22 points at No. 8 Kentucky. Demary enters this weekend ranked No. 9 in the SEC in steals at 1.53 spg.
This year marks the 26th edition of the SEC Community Service Teams for men’s and women’s basketball. All 21 league-sponsored sports have a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men’s and women’s sports chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began the concept with football in 1994.
