University of Georgia junior softball student-athlete Mary Wilson Avant has been named to the 2019 SEC Softball Community Service Team, the Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday.
Avant, a pitcher from Macon, Georgia, has participated in such community service events such as the Special Olympics of Northeast Georgia including the Hometown Rivals baseball game, UGA HEROs where she has fundraised and served as a committee member with the purpose of improving the quality of life for children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and Shop With A Bulldog where she has served as a mentor and raised funds to assist in providing clothing and personal supplies for underprivileged children.
Off the field, Avant is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, serving on the bi-laws committee as well as fundraising and assisting with Rock the CASA and Boots & BBQ event to benefit Clarke County CASA. She is a Terry College of Business Ambassador, member of the UGA Leadership and Education Development program, a SAAC representative, a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honors society and Order of the Omega.
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 21 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. Brittany Gray appeared on the 2018 SEC Community Service Team representing Georgia.
